Microsuction is the gold-standard method for removing ear wax — also known as ear cleaning or earwax removal — gentle, dry, performed under direct microscope vision.
Unlike older syringing or ear-irrigation methods, microsuction uses no water. A low-pressure suction device removes the wax under direct vision, so your audiologist can see exactly what they're doing throughout — and stop the moment the canal is clear. It's the same technique used by ENT specialists in hospital settings, and it's the only method we use at our Wimpole Street microsuction clinic.
You'll typically be in and out in 15 to 30 minutes, with the relief of a properly clear ear canal as soon as you stand up. For stubborn or impacted wax, your audiologist may suggest a short course of softening drops before a second visit — and that follow-up is included in the price.

Please — Don't Use Cotton Buds In Your Ears
Cotton buds are one of the most common causes of impacted wax we see at our Wimpole Street clinic. They tend to push wax deeper into the canal, where it hardens against the eardrum and becomes much harder to remove. They can also scratch the delicate canal lining and, in rare cases, perforate the eardrum if pushed in too far.
The ear canal is largely self-cleaning. If you feel a blockage, leave it alone and book a microsuction appointment. We'll have you sorted in 15 to 30 minutes.

How much is ear wax removal in London?
£65 for new patients — both ears included — at our London clinic on Wimpole Street. That is the all-inclusive fee for the appointment — consultation, otoscopy, microsuction of both ears, eardrum check and aftercare advice. If we find no wax, there is no charge at all, and if we cannot clear your ears in one go, the second appointment is free. Visited us before? Your clinic will confirm the price when you book.
Does microsuction hurt?
No. Microsuction is one of the most comfortable wax-removal methods there is. Most patients describe the suction as a quiet whooshing sound — slightly louder near the eardrum, but never painful. There is no water, no flushing pressure, and your clinician can see the canal at all times through the microscope.
How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments are 15 to 30 minutes from check-in to check-out.
What happens if you can't clear all the wax?
Occasionally wax is too hard to remove in one go. If that happens, we book you in for a free follow-up appointment a few days later and advise olive-oil drops in between to soften the remaining wax. The second appointment is at no extra charge.
Do I need to use ear drops first?
Not normally. Microsuction works very well without any drops. If your wax is particularly hard or impacted, your audiologist may recommend a few days of olive-oil drops or sodium-bicarbonate drops before a second visit — and that follow-up is included: you only pay once.
How is microsuction different from ear syringing or irrigation?
Syringing and irrigation use pressurised water to flush the canal — uncomfortable, risks pushing water onto a perforated eardrum, and gives the clinician no direct view. Microsuction is dry, performed under direct microscope vision, and considered the gold standard. It's the only method we use.
Can ear wax cause hearing loss?
Yes — it is one of the most common causes of sudden mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Once impacted wax is removed, the hearing returns to normal.
Can ear wax cause tinnitus?
Yes. Impacted wax is one of the more common reasons for new-onset tinnitus, and clearing the wax often clears the ringing.
Will microsuction help my hearing?
If your hearing has dropped because of wax, yes — often dramatically and immediately. If your hearing is still muffled after wax removal, your audiologist will recommend a hearing test to find out what else might be going on.
How often should I have my ears cleared?
It varies. Some people produce wax that clears itself naturally; others need it cleared every 6–12 months. Hearing aid wearers tend to need it slightly more often.
Do you remove ear wax for hearing aid wearers?
Yes — routinely. Hearing aids can cause wax to build up faster because the device blocks the canal's natural clearance route.
Can I have microsuction with a history of ear surgery or perforation?
In most cases, yes — but it's important to mention this when you book and at the start of your appointment. Your audiologist will examine carefully and tailor the approach.
Does private medical insurance cover ear wax removal?
Not usually — most UK insurers cover diagnostic audiology and consultations but consider routine wax removal a self-pay service. We're happy to confirm on the phone before you book.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. Book directly with us. If we find anything during otoscopy that needs ENT input we will refer you on directly.
