Microsuction in Eastcote

The Quietest, Most Precise Way To Clear Wax

Microsuction is the gold-standard method for removing ear wax — gentle, dry, and performed under direct vision through a clinical microscope.

Unlike older syringing or ear-irrigation methods, microsuction uses no water. A low-pressure suction device removes the wax under direct vision, so your audiologist can see exactly what they're doing throughout — and stop the moment the canal is clear. It's the same technique used by ENT specialists in hospital settings, and it's the only method we use at our Eastcote clinic.

You'll typically be in and out in 15 to 30 minutes, with the relief of a properly clear ear canal as soon as you stand up. For stubborn or deeply impacted wax, your audiologist may suggest a short course of softening drops before a second visit — and that follow-up is included in the price.

Your appointment, step by step

How Microsuction Works At Our Eastcote Clinic

A calm, unhurried sequence — most patients are in and out in 15 to 30 minutes, with almost no recovery time.

  1. Welcome & quick historyYour audiologist asks about any symptoms — blocked feeling, hearing change, tinnitus, itch — and any history of ear surgery or perforation, so the approach is right for you.
  2. Otoscopic examinationA careful look at each canal and eardrum. We use the clinical microscope for any view that needs more detail.
  3. Microsuction removalA low-pressure suction probe gently removes the wax under direct microscope vision — your clinician can see exactly what they're doing throughout, and stops the moment each canal is clear.
  4. Post-removal check & adviceA final look to confirm both canals are clear and the eardrums look healthy, plus clear aftercare guidance — including the cotton-bud rule below.
  5. Follow-up if requiredIf any wax is stubbornly impacted and needs softening drops before a second visit, that follow-up appointment is included in the £80 price.

Please — Don't Use Cotton Buds In Your Ears

We say this gently, but firmly: cotton buds are one of the most common causes of impacted wax we see at our Eastcote clinic. They tend to push wax deeper into the canal, where it hardens against the eardrum and becomes much harder to remove. Cotton buds can also scratch the delicate canal lining and, in rare cases, perforate the eardrum if a bud is pushed in too far.

The ear canal is largely self-cleaning. If you feel a blockage, leave it alone and book a microsuction appointment. We'll have you sorted in 15 to 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Eastcote Ear Wax Removal — Your Questions Answered

Does microsuction hurt?

No. Microsuction is one of the most comfortable wax-removal methods there is. Most patients describe the suction as a quiet, low-level whooshing sound — slightly louder near the eardrum, but never painful. There is no water, no flushing pressure, and your clinician can see the canal at all times through the microscope, so they stop the moment it's clear.

How long does the appointment take?

Most appointments are 15 to 30 minutes from check-in to check-out. The removal itself is usually faster than that — most of the time is spent on the examination, the conversation about ear-canal care, and a final check that everything is clear.

Do I need to use ear drops first?

Not normally. Microsuction works very well on most ear wax without any drops at all. If your wax is particularly hard or impacted, your audiologist may recommend a few days of olive-oil drops or sodium-bicarbonate ear drops before a second visit — and that follow-up is included in the £80 price.

Why does the price include a free follow-up?

Because occasionally — particularly with hard, impacted wax — a second visit after a few days of softening drops gives a better, cleaner result than forcing a single appointment. We'd rather do the job properly than rush it, so the second visit is included in the price.

How is microsuction different from ear syringing or irrigation?

Syringing and irrigation use pressurised water to flush the canal — which can be uncomfortable, risks water pushing onto a perforated eardrum, and offers your clinician no direct view of what's happening. Microsuction is dry, performed under direct microscope vision, and considered the gold standard. It's the only method we use.

Will microsuction help my hearing?

If your hearing has dropped because of wax, yes — often dramatically and immediately. Many patients describe a clear "ah, that's better" feeling as they walk out. If your hearing is still muffled after wax removal, your audiologist will recommend a hearing test to identify what else might be going on.

Can I have microsuction if I've had ear surgery or a perforated eardrum?

In most cases, yes — but it's important to mention this when you book and again at the start of your appointment. Microsuction is generally well tolerated by patients with a history of perforation, grommets or ear surgery, but your audiologist will examine carefully and tailor the approach. If there's any clinical concern, we'll refer to ENT.

How often should I have microsuction?

It varies enormously. Some people produce very little wax and need a microsuction visit perhaps once every few years; others have naturally narrow canals or skin conditions that produce wax quickly and benefit from a visit every six to twelve months. Your audiologist will advise based on what they see in your canal.

Do you offer microsuction at your other clinics?

Yes. London (Wimpole Street) is £80 and Brentwood is £70. The clinical approach and aftercare are identical at every clinic.

How much is ear wax removal in Eastcote?

£80 at our Eastcote clinic on Field End Road. All-inclusive — consultation, otoscopy, microsuction of one or both ears, eardrum check and aftercare advice. If we cannot clear your ears in one appointment, the follow-up is free.

What is microsuction?

Microsuction is the clinical method of choice for ear wax removal — low-pressure medical suction applied under direct microscope vision. Unlike syringing or irrigation, there is no water, no flushing, and your audiologist can see precisely what they are doing throughout the procedure.

Can ear wax cause hearing loss?

Yes — it is one of the most common causes of sudden mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Impacted wax physically blocks the ear canal and prevents sound from reaching the eardrum. Once cleared, hearing typically returns to normal immediately.

Can ear wax cause tinnitus?

Yes. Impacted wax is one of the more common causes of new-onset tinnitus — the pressure and blockage can create or amplify a ringing or buzzing sensation. Clearing the wax often resolves or significantly reduces the tinnitus. If the ringing persists after wax removal, your audiologist will recommend a tinnitus assessment.

Do you remove wax for hearing aid wearers?

Yes — routinely. Hearing aids can cause wax to build up faster because they partially block the canal's natural clearance route. Regular microsuction keeps the canal clear and protects the devices from wax damage.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. Book directly with us — there is no referral needed for private microsuction. If we find anything during otoscopy that warrants ENT input, we refer you on directly.
