The discreet choice

What Are Invisible Hearing Aids?

Invisible hearing aids are tiny devices worn deep inside the ear canal, where they sit out of sight — so you get the hearing you need without anyone seeing a hearing aid at all.

For many people, the visible nature of a hearing aid is the single biggest reason they put off getting help — and untreated hearing loss only gets harder to manage over time. Invisible hearing aids remove that barrier entirely. They are either custom-made from an impression of your ear (so they fit only you), or, in the case of Lyric, placed deep in the canal by your audiologist and worn around the clock for months at a time.

They use the same advanced sound processing as larger hearing aids — just in a remarkably small package. At VIP Hearing Solutions, we fit invisible styles from across all seven leading brands, and your audiologist will tell you honestly whether an invisible style is right for your hearing and the shape of your ear canal.

An honest look

The Pros & Cons of Invisible Hearing Aids

Invisible hearing aids are wonderful for the right person — but they aren't for everyone. Here's a straight, honest comparison so you can decide with your audiologist.

The upsides

Why people love them

  • Genuinely discreet — invisible in normal wear, so no self-consciousness.
  • Natural sound — sitting deep in the canal uses your outer ear's natural acoustics.
  • Less wind noise than behind-the-ear styles, as they're shielded inside the canal.
  • Comfortable under glasses, hats and masks — nothing behind the ear.
  • Custom-fitted to your ear alone, for a secure, comfortable seal.
The trade-offs

Things to weigh up

  • Best suited to mild to moderate hearing loss — not usually severe loss.
  • Need a canal that's large enough and the right shape to take them.
  • The tiny size can be fiddlier to handle for those with reduced dexterity.

None of this is a dealbreaker — it's simply what your audiologist weighs up with you. Often the answer is an invisible style; sometimes a discreet receiver-in-canal model gives you more features for a similar, barely-there look.

Is it for you?

Who Are Invisible Hearing Aids Right For?

Invisible hearing aids are an excellent choice if discretion matters most to you and your hearing loss is in the right range. They're especially popular with:

First-time wearers

People getting their first hearing aids who feel self-conscious — invisibility removes the biggest emotional hurdle to treating hearing loss early.

Glasses & mask wearers

With nothing behind the ear, invisible styles don't compete for space with spectacle arms or face-mask loops.

Active lives

Sitting securely in the canal, they stay put through exercise and movement — and pick up less wind noise outdoors.

The honest test is your hearing and your ear canal. Book a consultation and your audiologist will confirm, at no obligation, whether an invisible style will give you the hearing you need.

Fitted with precision

How We Fit Invisible Hearing Aids

The smaller the hearing aid, the more the fitting matters — and that's where the expertise of a HCPC-registered audiologist makes all the difference. It begins with a full diagnostic hearing assessment to map exactly where your hearing needs support.

For custom invisible styles, we take a precise impression of your ear canal so the device is made to fit you — and only you. When your hearing aids are ready, we tailor the sound to your unique listening environments: the conversations, the restaurants, the music you love. Then your free 30-day home trial lets you live with them in the real world before you decide. Throughout, your VIP aftercare package keeps them fine-tuned and performing — because an invisible hearing aid should be effortless, not just unseen.

Common questions

Invisible Hearing Aids — Your Questions Answered

What are invisible hearing aids?

Invisible hearing aids are very small devices worn deep in the ear canal, where they can't be seen in everyday wear. They include invisible-in-canal (IIC) and completely-in-canal (CIC) devices, plus the extended-wear Phonak Lyric. They use the same advanced technology as larger hearing aids in a much smaller package.

Are invisible hearing aids really invisible?

In normal, day-to-day situations, yes — they sit deep enough in the canal that other people won't see them. Phonak Lyric is genuinely 100% invisible. With IIC and CIC styles, someone looking directly into your ear at close range might glimpse them, but in conversation they're effectively unseen.

How much do invisible hearing aids cost?

Premium invisible hearing aids at VIP Hearing Solutions start from £3,295 per pair, fully fitted, with your assessment, a free 30-day home trial and aftercare included. See our hearing aid prices page for more, and ask about interest-free finance.

Who are invisible hearing aids suitable for?

They suit most people with mild to moderate hearing loss who have an ear canal large enough and the right shape to take them. They're especially popular with first-time wearers, people in the public eye, and glasses or mask wearers. Your audiologist will confirm whether they're right for you at your consultation.

What's the difference between IIC, CIC and Lyric?

IIC (invisible-in-canal) sits deepest and is custom-made to be unseen. CIC (completely-in-canal) is slightly larger, sitting just inside the canal opening. Lyric is unique — it's placed deep in the canal by your audiologist and worn continuously for months at a time, with no daily handling at all.

Can invisible hearing aids treat severe hearing loss?

Usually not. Because of their small size and battery, invisible styles are best for mild to moderate loss. For more significant loss, a discreet receiver-in-canal model gives you the power and features you need while still being very subtle. Your audiologist will advise honestly.

Do invisible hearing aids have Bluetooth?

Traditionally most invisible styles didn't, as there is little room for an aerial in such a tiny shell — but that is changing fast. Newer models such as Oticon Zeal are now Bluetooth-enabled and rechargeable even at an in-canal size, so you can stream calls and music straight to your ears without sacrificing discretion. Your audiologist will recommend the right option for you. See Bluetooth hearing aids.

Are invisible hearing aids comfortable?

Yes — custom styles are made from an impression of your own ear, so they fit precisely and securely. Like anything in the ear they take a short time to get used to, which is exactly what your free 30-day trial is for.

How long do the batteries last?

Most custom invisible styles use small disposable batteries lasting several days. Phonak Lyric is different — there are no batteries to change at all; your audiologist replaces the whole device periodically as part of a subscription. Your audiologist will explain the options.

Where can I get invisible hearing aids near me?

We fit invisible hearing aids at all three clinics: London (Wimpole Street), Eastcote and Brentwood. Book a consultation and your audiologist will confirm the right invisible style for you.
