On 24 August 2026, I was delighted to be invited by Phonak to an exclusive pre-release event introducing Phonak EON, the company’s latest generation of hearing technology.
Being invited to events such as this is important to us at VIP Hearing Solutions. As an independent hearing clinic, it gives us early access to new technology, the opportunity to speak directly with the people behind its development and, most importantly, to understand what genuinely represents an improvement for our patients.
What Is New in Phonak EON Sphere?
Phonak EON Sphere is 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the previous Sphere generation, on Phonak's figures. Its HYPERSONIC chip runs Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 with the same speech-in-noise performance as before while using 37% less energy, and the platform adds AutoSense OS AI 8.0, WindBlock 2.0, Auracast broadcast audio and EasyGuard domes. Battery is up to 38 hours, about 22 in typical use.
The original Phonak Sphere represented one of the biggest advances in hearing technology we had seen for many years, particularly for people struggling to follow conversation in background noise. Phonak Audéo™ EON Sphere takes that technology and further refines it.
A new, more efficient HYPERSONIC™ AI chip has allowed Phonak to make EON Sphere 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the previous Sphere generation, on Phonak’s own figures, while retaining the powerful real-time artificial intelligence that made Sphere so impressive in the first place.
There are also several important developments: Spheric Speech Clarity™ 3.0, the latest version of the processing that separates speech from surrounding noise, which Phonak says delivers the same speech-in-noise performance as before while using 37% less energy; the new AutoSense OS™ AI 8.0 operating system; WindBlock 2.0, which Phonak reports automatically reduces wind noise so speech and outdoor sounds are clearer; and the addition of Auracast™ broadcast audio, which streams sound straight to the hearing aids in venues that have installed Auracast transmitters, alongside Phonak’s Bluetooth® connectivity with virtually any Bluetooth enabled device.
On battery, Phonak quotes up to 38 hours on a full charge, which is its maximum figure. Phonak’s own datasheet expects around 22 hours of typical use with streaming and time in noise, and that is the figure I would plan around.
Should You Upgrade if You Already Wear Phonak Sphere?
Not necessarily. If you wear Sphere Infinio or Infinio Ultra Sphere, you already have Phonak's core speech-in-noise technology, and Phonak's own paper says EON keeps the same performance. The reasons to move are size, weight, Auracast and easier care. Book an EON review and we will show you honestly what has changed for you.
This is perhaps the most important point.
If you already own Phonak Sphere hearing aids, whether the original Audéo Sphere Infinio or the Infinio Ultra Sphere, you still have an outstanding pair of hearing aids.
EON should be viewed as an evolution of Sphere rather than a technology that suddenly makes the previous generation obsolete. The fundamental breakthrough, Phonak’s dedicated AI processing of speech in complex background noise, was introduced with Sphere and remains the reason we have recommended it so highly.
In fact, many of our patients are doing very well with their existing Sphere technology, and there would be no suggestion from us that they suddenly need to change. What I would suggest is an EON review: bring your current hearing aids, and we will show you what has changed and tell you honestly whether it matters for you.
EON simply demonstrates how quickly this area of hearing technology is developing. Phonak has taken an already very successful concept and made it smaller, lighter, more efficient and better connected.
Who Is EON Sphere For?
EON Sphere is the biggest step up for people on Phonak platforms from before Sphere, such as Lumity, Paradise or Marvel, because those have no Spheric Speech Clarity at all. Existing Sphere wearers gain size, weight and connectivity. Anyone who relies on hearing loops should know EON has no telecoil. A hearing test and a home trial settle it.
From what I saw at the event and from Phonak’s own published material, this is how I would frame it for the people who ask me.
- You wear a Phonak model from before Sphere, such as Lumity, Paradise or Marvel, and background noise is where you struggle. Those platforms do not have Spheric Speech Clarity at all, so EON Sphere would be a genuine step up in the technology available to you. In Phonak’s own study of 27 experienced wearers, people were twice as likely to understand every word with Spheric Speech Clarity switched on than off (Wright et al., 2024, Phonak Field Study News, first-generation Sphere, manufacturer research).
- You wear Sphere Infinio or Infinio Ultra Sphere and are happy with them. You already have the core speech-in-noise technology. The case for EON is a smaller, lighter body, Auracast, WindBlock 2.0 and EasyGuard™ domes. Worth seeing, not urgent.
- You want something more discreet. Phonak states EON Sphere is 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the previous Sphere generation; the housing measures 28.7 x 12.6 x 8.9 mm and weighs 2.4 g without the receiver (Phonak product information).
- You rely on hearing loop systems. EON has no telecoil (T setting), so it cannot pick up induction loops directly. Auracast is Phonak’s answer in venues that have installed it, and the UK roll-out is still under way. Tell your audiologist before you choose.
- You wear another brand. The only fair way to compare is a hearing test and a trial in your own life. We fit seven brands. We don’t work for manufacturers. We work for you.
Our First Impressions
Having now seen the technology ahead of its UK introduction, I am particularly excited by the smaller physical design and the further development of Phonak’s AI processing.
As an independent clinic, our role isn’t simply to recommend the newest hearing aid. It is to understand what has genuinely changed, compare it with the best technology already available and decide whether those changes are relevant to the individual sitting in front of us.
That is exactly what we will be doing with EON.
