Speech AI and Context AI

Oticon describes Reveal as the first hearing aid powered by a Dual AI system. Two deep neural networks run at the same time on the Reveal AI™ platform. Speech AI continuously detects speech from all directions, analysing sound every 2 milliseconds across 24 channels, in Oticon’s description.

Context AI continuously analyses the sound environment to deliver the right level of support, with up to 12 dB of noise suppression at Oticon Reveal 1, set by your audiologist. AI Voice Clarifier searches for speech in 360 degrees in difficult places, Sound Enhancer adds detail mainly in the speech frequencies, and Virtual Outer Ear recreates the natural cues of your outer ear in easy ones.

The Balance Point

Oticon’s BrainHearing thesis is that the brain needs speech and contextual sound in the right proportion, and that the proportion shifts by environment and by person. Reveal’s two AIs are designed to find that point rather than choosing one over the other.

Oticon’s 4D Sensor technology, carried over from Intent and now feeding both AIs, reads your head and body movement alongside the 360-degree sound scene, so the balance follows what you are doing: turning to a friend, walking, or sitting still. The 4D Sensor is on Oticon Reveal 1 and 2.

Reveal Optimizer and the Reveal Amplifier

Feedback, the whistle from a poorly sealed fitting, limits how much amplification an audiologist can safely use. Oticon’s Reveal Optimizer™ is designed to prevent it, so your audiologist can give you the amplification your hearing needs with an open, comfortable fitting. Oticon quotes it working in 64 channels with four times the spectral precision of the previous system.

The Reveal Amplifier™ includes a SuddenSound Stabilizer that, in Oticon’s words, can handle more than 500,000 sudden sounds a day: cutlery, doors, a dropped key.

Wind & Handling Stabilizer 2.0

Wind across the microphones, and the rustle of a hand, a hat or hair, are the sounds that spoil a walk or a bike ride. Oticon’s Wind & Handling Stabilizer 2.0 reduces them by up to 40 dB, up to 10 dB more than Oticon’s first generation, on Oticon’s figures.** It is included at all four Reveal levels.

Connected All Day

  • Bluetooth® LE Audio and Bluetooth Low Energy on all four levels, with direct streaming to compatible iPhone, iPad and Android™ devices.
  • Hands-free calls: the hearing aids’ own microphones pick up your voice.
  • Auracast™ broadcast audio in venues equipped with an Auracast transmitter, joined from the Oticon Companion app. Some Auracast features are only available with Android 15 or later, and Auracast is still being rolled out in the UK, so check whether a venue offers it.

Oticon CROS RE is for single-sided deafness: hearing loss in one ear that a hearing aid cannot help. Worn on that ear, it captures sound from the poorer side and sends it to a hearing aid on the better ear, so you hear from both sides.

Oticon has kept the shell and changed the thinking inside it. Reveal’s two AIs run at the same time: one finds the voices, the other decides how much of the room you should still hear. That is a different aim from most noise reduction, which tends to strip the world away, and it is why I want Reveal on a patient’s ears in a restaurant before I judge it.

Three things I will be watching at our fittings. First, the balance itself: whether the context stays natural rather than washed out, which is the promise. Second, feedback: Oticon says Reveal Optimizer lets me use more amplification with an open fitting, and open fittings are what most of my patients want. Third, wind: up to 40 dB of wind and handling reduction, on Oticon’s figures, should show first on the patients who walk and cycle.
